Set up training tracks and ranks
Build rank ladders for your org with requirements members tick off, approve their advancement, and grant roles when they rank up.
Updated 2026-10-26
Training on SC Orgs is a ladder of ranks inside a track, like "Combat" or "Salvage". Each rank has requirements. Members tick them off (or get them signed off by a trainer), then advance, automatically or with an officer's approval. Set it up on Operations › Personnel › Training, on the Manage tab.
You need the Manage Ranks permission to set up tracks (Owner and Admin have it).
Create a track and its ranks
- On your community page, click Operations, then Personnel › Training.
- Open the Manage tab.
- Click + New Track, enter a Track Name and create it.
- With the track selected, click + Rank.
- Enter the Rank Name and its Tier (1 = lowest). Add a Description and an Icon URL if you like.
- Optional: under Roles granted on achievement, pick the roles members get when they reach this rank.
- Click Create Rank. Repeat for each rank, with the tier going up each time.
Edit a track or a rank
- On the Manage tab, click the pencil next to a track's name to rename it, change its description, or set its prerequisites.
- Click Edit on a rank to change its name, tier, description, icon, Auto-advance, or the roles it grants.
- Click Save.
Add requirements to a rank
- Under the rank, type a task in Quick add requirement… (Enter to save) and press Enter.
- For a longer requirement, click + Add with full details instead: give it a Title, a Description, and a knowledge base article or guide under KB Article (optional), then click Add Requirement.
How members advance
- A member opens Training › My Progress and picks the track.
- They tick each requirement of their next rank as they finish it. For a requirement marked Requires signoff, they click Request sign-off instead (see below).
- When everything is done:
- on an Auto-advance rank, they get the rank straight away;
- otherwise they click Request Advancement, and an officer opens the Advancement tab and clicks Approve (or Deny).
- The member gets the rank, and any roles it grants.
Approving needs the Approve Advancement permission (Owner and Admin have it).
Sign off a requirement
Some tasks, like a checkride or a supervised op, need a trainer to confirm them. Tick Requires signoff on the requirement.
- The member clicks Request sign-off next to it. It shows Awaiting sign-off.
- A trainer opens the Signoffs tab. It lists the waiting requests: member, requirement, rank and track.
- They click Sign Off, or Deny with an optional note for the member.
- The member is notified either way. A denied request shows Sign-off denied and the note, and they can Request again.
Signing off needs the Signoff Training permission (Owner and Admin have it). Nobody can sign off their own requirement.
Advanced
- Auto-advance. Tick Auto-advance on a rank and members don't need an officer: the moment the last requirement is done (or signed off), they get the rank. It only applies to ranks with at least one requirement.
- Who can sign off. Under Who can sign off? on a requirement, pick roles to limit it: then only members with Signoff Training and one of those roles can sign it off. Leave it empty for anyone with Signoff Training.
- Prerequisites. In a track's Edit, add prerequisites: another track and the tier a member must reach in it before they can advance in this one, for example tier 2 in "Basic" before starting "Combat".
- Link guides as requirements. In KB Article (optional), search for an article. The list shows your org's own knowledge base articles, then Official guides from SC Orgs. Members see a link to the guide next to the requirement. Write your own articles first: see Write org docs and Comm-Link announcements.
- Ranks that give roles. With Roles granted on achievement, a rank can unlock permissions, for example access to an officer role. See Roles and permissions.
- Give every rank at least one requirement. Members advance once a rank's requirements are all done, so a rank with none can't be reached that way.
