Roles and permissions for your org
Create custom roles for your Star Citizen org, pick their permissions and rank, and assign them to members. Covers the Owner, Admin and Member defaults.
Updated 2026-10-26
Roles decide what each member can do in your org. Every community starts with Owner, Admin and Member. To give a group of members its own set of permissions, like officers or recruiters, create a custom role and assign it to them.
You need the Manage Roles permission (Owner and Admin have it).
Create a role
- On your community page, click Manage, then open the Roles tab.
- Click + Create Role.
- Enter a Name and, if you like, a Description.
- Set the Rank, from 1 to 99. A higher rank is more senior: Owner is 100, Admin 80, Member 10.
- Under Permissions, tick what this role can do. Permissions are grouped by area, like Members, Events, Knowledge Base, Training & Ranks or Dispatch, and each group has a checkbox that selects the whole group.
- Click Create.
Give the role to a member
- In Manage, open the Members tab.
- Click Assign Roles next to the member.
- Tick the roles they should have, and click Save Roles.
A member can hold several roles. They get every permission from all their roles combined, and their rank is the highest rank among them.
You can only give roles ranked below your own highest role, and only roles whose permissions you have yourself. So you can't give anyone your own top role or one above it: an Admin can make someone an Officer or a Recruiter, but not an Admin. You can also only change the roles of members ranked below you. The owner can give any role. Nobody can be given Owner: the owner hands it over with Transfer Ownership instead.
Delete a role
On the Roles tab, click Delete on a custom role and confirm. Members who hold it lose it, and anyone left with no role at all gets Member back. Invite codes for the role stop working. You can't delete Owner, Admin or Member.
Remove a member
- In Manage, open the Members tab.
- Click Remove next to the member, and confirm.
They lose their roles, their places in units and their training ranks. They can join again later with an invite or an application. Removing needs the Remove Members permission (Owner and Admin have it), and you can only remove members ranked below you: not someone of your own rank or higher, and never the owner. The owner can remove anyone.
Leave an org
On the community page, click Leave and confirm. Your roles, unit places and training ranks there go with it. The owner can't leave: transfer ownership to another member first (Manage › Danger Zone › Transfer Ownership).
What the default roles can do
- Owner has every permission and can't be edited. Each community has one owner.
- Admin can do everything except delete the community and use the HR permissions, apart from reviewing applications, which Admin can do. See Review applications.
- Member can see the member list, create and edit events, read the knowledge base and write articles, see training, the fleet, diplomacy and the treasury, report donations, request and answer dispatch calls, and see and join units.
You can edit Admin and Member like any other role (click Edit on the role), but you can't delete them.
Advanced
- Rank limits. Unless you're the owner, you can only create, edit or delete roles ranked below your own, and only grant permissions you have yourself. You can only give roles ranked strictly below your highest role (never your own top role), only change the roles of members ranked below you, and only remove members ranked below you. Invites and training ranks that grant roles follow the same rule. This stops an officer from promoting someone to their own level or above.
- Custom roles vs the defaults. Keep Member for what everyone needs, and add small roles for jobs: a "Recruiter" with Invite Members, View Applications and Manage Applications (see Review applications), a "Logistics" role with Manage Treasury, a "Dispatcher" with Manage Dispatch. Assign them on top of Member, so taking a job away never takes away the basics.
- All 68 permissions are in the editor, across 16 groups. They include the ops areas: Knowledge Base, Training & Ranks, Units, Dispatch, Fleet, Treasury, Diplomacy and Citizen Intel.
- The Manage page opens for anyone who can use one of its tabs. Profile needs Update Community. Members needs Update Community, Manage Members, Remove Members or Assign Roles. Roles needs Manage Roles, Invites needs Invite Members, and Danger Zone needs Delete Community.
- Ranks from training. A training rank can give roles automatically when a member reaches it: see Training and ranks.
